Manipur HC directs State on rape, murder of minor

Imphal, February 24 (MExN): The Manipur High Court on Wednesday, in response to a writ petition relating to the rape and murder of a minor girl, aged around 10 years, passed an order directing the state government to submit the status report so far initiated within a period of three months.

According to a press release from the Women Action for development, the case pertains to an FIR registered with the Kumbi Police. The said case of rape and murder of the minor occurred during the intervening period of January 24 to 31, 2014 after the minor failed to return home having gone out to herd cattle. The minor was found murdered and buried under a culvert. A suo moto case was registered by the Officer-In-Charge of Kumbi Police Station but ironically, after a lapse of more than a year since the registration of the FIR, the investigating authority has failed to identify the culprits of the crime.   WAD in their release stated that the father of the victim has been running from pillar to posts seeking justice. Prior to approaching the high court, the father had approached Bishnupur Superintendent of Police, Manipur Director General of Police, National Commission for Protection of Child Rights and the Manipur State Commission for the Protection of Child Rights, with little success.
