Youth wing president of JD(U) Manipur unit, Bhaktaraj Thiyam escaped unhurt in a gun attack on Saturday night, sources said on Sunday.
The source said that three armed miscreants who came on a white Bolero attacked him with small guns along NH-102 at Waithou under Thoubal police station last night, around 8.10 pm.
The armed miscreants fired some rounds at the car he was returning home after visiting one of his relatives in Thoubal district. He escaped unhurt but the bullets hit on his car damaging windshields. There were bullet marks on the body of the car.
Thiyam told reporters today that the attack took place on his way back from Thoubal where he visited a house of his relative last night.
He said that a Bolero driving behind him along the NH-102 overtook him on reaching Waithou area. The vehicle, then, blocked his way, forcing him to stop his car.
After that, three miscreants came out of the Bolero car and asked him if he was the president of the youth wing of JD(U) Manipur unit.
Out of fear, he replied that he was not the person they asked for. Then, the miscreants conducted a check on his car and took away money from his wallet which was put in the car.
The miscreants then, all of a sudden, fired some rounds towards him before leaving the place with the same vehicle they came with. They drove the vehicle toward Thoubal headquarters side, he added.
He miraculously escaped unhurt. But, the bullets shattered the front and back windshields of his car. Some bullets also hit the body of his car, Thiyam said.
A complaint has been lodged with the police regarding the incident, he said while drawing the attention of the concerned authorities to nab the miscreants at the earliest.
The JD(U) youth wing chief further expressed concern over the increasing gun culture in the valley areas amid the unrest owing to the ethnic conflict.
He demanded that the concerned authorities must take up concrete steps to check the gun culture in the state.
