Manipur: Mass protest & meet held on crimes against women

Women from Ukhrul district, Manipur participate in the protest to sensitize the people on the increasing crime against women and attack  on Human Rights defenders.

 

Ukhrul, September 22 (MExN): A Mass Protest and public Meeting was held at Ringui village, Ukhrul District organised by Ringui Women Society Ukhrul.

 

Around 150 women and men participated in the protest including girls. The main objectives of the programme was to sensitize the people of the area on the increasing crime against women, attack to human Right defenders and family indicating the 4th July attack to U Natacha and the 24th July gun attack to WAD.

 

Reverend Arui, Pastor Ringui Baptist Church, Phillimon Ahun village elder, Tammina Women Chairperson, Ringui Baptist Church, Ruth, Secretary Ringui Women Society, Sobita Mangsatabam , Secretary Women Action for Development, Priyadarshini M Gangte, Lecturer Damdei Christian College respectively were the presidium members and resource persons.

 

Phamila Tuithung shared on the topic ‘’Women and Drug issues,” Ng Liklaileima on the topic ‘’Role of Media in preventing Crime against Women’’, Priyadarshini M Gangte on the topic ‘’Customary practices among the tribal community,’’ Sobita mangsatabam on the topic ‘’Gender Based Violence in Manipur.’.

 

The increasing Crime against women and systematic attack to Human Rights Defenders and families were taken seriously in the meeting and to fight and prevent such crime collectively in the future. After the meeting a mass protest was held in front of the Ringui Church using different slogans to stop attacking to Human Rights Defenders and prevent Crime against Women.

 

Slogans included - Arrest the attackers on U Natacha on 4th July 2019, Thang amadi Nongmei paiduna nupi angangda kihanba tokkadabani, Punish all the criminals (rapist and murderer), We want proper implementation of fast tract court in all the Districts of Manipur, We want speedy Justice etc.
