A joint statement of All Manipur Working Journalists’ Union (AMWJU) and Editors’ Guild Manipur (EGM) on Sunday condemned the recent brutal assault of a reporter by armed miscreants.
The armed miscreants physically assaulted Kumar Nongthombam , a reporter of Image TV, a Kakching based local cable network at his rented room at Wangkhei of Imphal East district on the intervening night of February 23 and 24.
The joint statement of AMWJU and EGM alleged that the reporter was taken away by the armed miscreants after being assaulted physically.

The reporter was later handed over to two members of a civil society organisation.
According to injured Kumar, unidentified armed miscreants forcibly entered his room, assaulted him without provocation, and disregarded his press credentials, discarding them into the fire.

He was blindfolded and beaten up while taking to the DM University campus. He was released in the wee hours of February 24 and was admitted to Raj Medicity for treatment.

The AMWJU and EGM while denouncing the attack on the reporters said that while journalists often face risks in their line of duty, Kumar’s ordeal transcended the professional hazards.
The joint statement further urged all concerns to refrain from such egregious acts in the future. If necessary, the two bodies may be compelled to boycott the organisation involved in the case.
