Manipur: Parents collect belongings of wards from SRHSS

Imphal, July 27 (NNN): Parents of students staying in the boarding at the controversy-ridden Standard Robarth Higher Secondary School (SRHSS), Canchipur in Imphal today collected belongings of their wards from the hostel.

The school has remained closed since July 18 after a 14-year-old girl student was found death in a suspicious manner and following pressures from various civil society organisations, particularly from student bodies.

After some student bodies announced closure of the school, students of the school were out of class and students staying in the boarding left the institute considering the prevailing situation in the school campus. According to the parents, earlier, none of them were allowed to enter the dormitory. Some parents expressed shock on seeing the condition of the dormitory where their wards were kept for study alleging that there are no fans or any other extra facilities for comfortable stay. Besides, they also reportedly witnessed double decker iron beds, congested with no sufficient space for the students to move freely.

A total of 147 girls were staying in the girl’s hostel of the school. Talking to reporters, general secretary of All Manipur Students’ Union (AMSU), Bipinchandra Ahanthem alleged that Standard Robarth Higher Secondary School was among some private schools opposing Manipur Private School Registration Act, 2017 which has been passed by the Manipur State Assembly in 2017. The general secretary of AMSU then assured the student body were there to assist the police and parents. Mention may be made that following the suspicious death of the girl student, some student bodies announced closure of the school.
