Manipur police on Saturday disposed of 1,729.662 kg of contraband drugs seized during drives against drugs.
The disposed drugs were 6.319kg of heroin powder, 18.619 kg of WY (Amphetamine tablets), 1,704 kg of contraband ganja, 595 gram of Spasmo Proxyvon (SP) tablets and 129 gram of N-10 tablets.
The disposal of the drugs was carried out at the Shija Common Bio-Medical Waste Treatment Facility at Lamdeng of Imphal West district today evening, around 4 pm.
The drugs were destroyed in the presence of many senior officers of the state police following all formalities.
Talking to reporters, State Police IGP Zone-1, Themthing Ngashangva said that the disposal was done simultaneously with other seven states of the northeast.
He said that the disposal of the drugs seized by different law enforcing agencies in the eight states of the northeast including Manipur was following a resolution passed by 'Drug Trafficking and National Security' held today in Assam’s Guwahati today. The meeting chaired by Union Home minister Amit Shah was attended by chief ministers and DGPs of all northeastern states, he also said.
The drugs destroyed today were related to 57 major cases of drug seizure by the state police, he said.
The regional meeting on 'Drug Trafficking and National Security' held today in Guwahati under the chair of the Union Home minister discussed the drug scenario in the northeastern region and ways to mitigate it.
Manipur CM, N Biren Singh attended the meeting along with state DGP (in-charge) P Doungel.
Various agendas pertaining to examining the drug situation in the northeastern region and potential solutions were brought up during the meet.
The CM in one of his social media posts, stated that the meeting was another step taken towards realizing PM Narendra Modi’s vision to make India become free from drugs. After the meeting, 40,000 kgs of seized drugs were destroyed in the northeast, he added.
