Manipur UGs declare ‘Black Day’ to protest merger with India

Imphal | October 14 : Declaring October 15 as the "National Black Day", the Coordination Committee of seven underground organizations of Manipur has imposed a bandh from midnight of Friday till 5:30 pm of October 15 against the merger of Manipur with the Indian Union on October 15, 1949.
The Coordination Committee is an umbrella organizations including Kangleipak Communist Party ( KCP), Kanglei Yaon Kanna Lup ( KYKL), People’s Revolutionary Party of Kangleipak ( PREPAK), PREPAK ( Pro), Revolutionary People’s front ( RPF), United National Liberation front ( UNLF and United people’s Party of Kangleipak ( UPPK).
India formally announced the merger of the state of Manipur with India on October 15, 1949 after the then King of Manipur Maharaj Bodhchandra was forced to sign deceitfully on the pre-drafted Merger Agreement on September 21 of the same year, stated the Coordination Committee in a press communique.
Since the forceful merger, the people have opposed against it and the various militant groups fighting for liberation in the state have also been observing October 15 as "National Black Day" every year, the statement said.
This year, the Coordination Committee has collectively decided to observe the day so as to generate public opposition against the agreement, added the statement.
Calling upon the people to support the strike called by the committee, it further appealed to suspend normal trade activities, movement on roads, games and sports as well as entertainment programmes on this day.
However, medical, media, fire service and religious ceremonies would be relaxed from the purview of the general strike, the statement informed.
