Manipur: Union Minister Subhas Sarkar advocates holistic education

Union Minister of State for Education, Dr Subhas Sarkar on Monday urged professors of Manipur University to give emphasis on imposing holistic education to the students of the university.

The Union Minister who is in Imphal on a four-day official tour today reviewed the academic and other developmental programmes being taken up for the development of the Central university.

He said that holistic education is very important while listening to the suggestions and comments of the professors who tabled the academic related programmes being taken up in the university under various Central Sponsored Schemes.

The review meeting mainly focused on the implementation of the National Education Policy 2020 which the university is preparing to commence from the next academic session (2022-23).

He observed that holistic education is more important today than ever before because of the ease with which students can access information.

Dr Sarkar said that holistic education focuses immensely on each student discovering their unique pathway, he said, and added that the developments of emotional, intellectual, physical, spiritual and social aspects of the student are the main focus areas of holistic education.

At the same time, fixing of targets by the students is also equally important, he said, asking the professors present in the meeting to focus on imposing holistic education to the students.

Dr Sarkar added that NEP 2020 aims to strengthen the new learning paradigm by adopting new education technologies or developing available in-house skills.

The students' acquired knowledge will help them to establish values as well as contribute to the nation and the world's development, he observed. 

Dr Sarkar also stressed that inclusion of Indian knowledge systems in teaching and learning while asserting that to know what the aim of the education is very important in holistic education.

Meanwhile, Registrar of Manipur University, Prof W Chanbabu who initiated the review meeting presented a brief history of Manipur University which is now functioning under the Union ministry of Human Resource Development. He informed that the university is preparing to start implementation of the NEP from the 2022-23 academic sessions.

Manipur Education Minister, Th Basantakumar and vice chancellor N Lokendra Singh of the university were among others who took part in the review meeting.

The Vice Chancellor stressed on the need for expansion of the present campus of the university or opening of a second campus of the university so that it accommodates ever increasing infrastructures.

After the review meeting, the Union Minister on also interacted with the students of the university at the court hall of the university.
