Manipur University crisis: Students’ bodies to agitate

Manipur, July 20 (MExN): An umbrella organization of all the hill based students' organization, All Tribal Student Union, Manipur (ATSUM), All Naga Students' Organisations Manipur (ANSAM) and the Kuki Students' Organisation General Headquarters (KSO- GHQ) has questioned the prolonged agitation which has affected normal academic activities in the university. It also sought to agitate for inactions within three days.   The organizations, through a joint statement issued by Vareiyo Shatsang, President, ATSUM Shon Baite, General Secretary, KSO H/Q, Jopeph Adani President, ANSAM stated that it has been very passive with “a clear conscience that tribals are not into chaos, anarchy and in pandemonium unless there are valid grounds to protest or rebel.   More than 50 days from the onset of the agitation for removal of the Vice Chancellor from Manipur University and its aftermath consequences have put all academic activities at stake leading to irreparable loss in terms of human resources, the release pointed.   Adding that the Manipur University is the main artery of the temple of learning, procurement of requisite documents for further studies, it said “the total shut down of administrative block and examination cell of Manipur University is hampering the academic pursuit of nearly twenty thousand graduates whose result are yet to be declared due to anarchy in Manipur university.” It is very disappointing to learn that the result of the 5th Semester of Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) has not been declared till date.   Even after the police personnel meted out brutality to DESAM general secretary, concerned authorities have turned a deaf ear. “If the authority at the helms of affairs at the Centre does not feel the pinch and if the issue is belittled for political mileage, should the agitators continue to stick to their demand without considering the direct impact on the career of the students?” it questioned.   Pointing that the prolonged agitation has no loss for the VC or HRD but the people of Manipur, the release further relented that the allegations leveled against the VC be proved with facts and evidences, and further let the concerned authority at the centre and state initiate for an impartial enquiry from a competent authority as per the law of the land to deliver justice.   The release further reiterated their stance to let the Rule of Law prevail without further resorting to violence. It also appealed the authorities to re-open Examination Cell and Administrative Block to enable early declaration of 6th Semester results without delay and initiate prompt steps by the competent authority for probing an independent enquiry consisting of members from outside the box of the MU and HRD.   The organizations urging all concerned to give efforts in bringing normalcy in the University said, “if the concerned authorities at the state and centre fail to resolve the MU row amicably within few days' time as desired, the three organizations will be compelled to take up counter agitation.”
