Newmai News Network SENAPATI | August 6 Rallies were carried out in the district headquarters of Senapati, Ukhrul and in Imphal today against the prolonging closure of Manipur University. Today's rallies in Senapati and Ukhrul were organised by student based organisations of the respective districts. However, it was not certain as to who might have organised the rally at the Manipur University gate in Imphal. In Senapati town, a large number of students carrying banners and placards marched across the market silently on two sides of the road. School students in uniform from various institutions took part in the rally. In Ukhrul, the students gathered at a ground and marched through the streets of the district headquarters today demanding that the Manipur University resumes classes soon. The demand for the removal of Prof A P Pandey as the Vice Chancellor of Manipur University began on May 30. In this regard, the Manipur University Teachers Association (MUTA), Manipur University Students Union (MUSU) and Manipur University Staffs Association (MUSA) calling themselves as ‘Manipur University Community’ are on relay hunger strike. Meanwhile, a large number of people today carried out a march rally against prolonging closure of Manipur University at the varsity gate. The rally came from Kakwa side and moved towards the Manipur University gate. On seeing the people marching in large number towards the Manipur University gate, the agitating Manipur University students attempted to confront the former at the university gate. The counter-protestors (not the Manipur University students or staff) said that they organised the rally against prolonging closure of Manipur University. The police fired tear gas shells to control the situation at the Manipur University gate. Seven university students and a teacher reportedly sustained injuries in police action, according to unconfirmed sources.
