A long-awaited wish of the villagers of Longkhim area to find a marketing linkage for their agriculture produce and crafts finally materialized with the inauguration of a MARCOFED Marketing Complex at Longkhim town on Wednesday last.
The marketing shed was inaugurated by Advisor, Treasuries & Accounts and Legal Metrology& Consumer Protection, Dr. TM Lotha in presence of Minister for Co-operation and Relief & Rehabilitation, Imtilemba Sangtam, district administration, officials from MARCOFED Ltd., public elders and villagers.
Addressing a public meeting after the inauguration, Dr. TM Lotha said it is high time that Nagas learn to stand on their own feet economically. He said since attainment of statehood way back in 1963, Nagaland has been dependent of the Centre for its economic survival. Naga public too has become too dependent of the government for jobs, salaries and subsidies. To achieve self-reliance and economic independence, Nagas must once again imbibe work culture, honesty and integrity, he said.
The advisor said the opening of a marketing complex is a significant step towards boosting of the grass root economy and urged the public of the area, especially farmers and artisans, to make full use of the infrastructure to enhance their livelihood. Lotha also said one of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s main vision is improve the living condition of the poor and downtrodden and to bridge the gap between the haves and haves not. He further urged the public of Longkhim area to avail the various skill development programmes introduced by Government of India towards employment of the vast educated unemployed youths in the country.
Minister for Co-operation, Imtilemba Sangtam, who also represents 52 Longkhim-Chare A/C, said the painstaking efforts of MARCOFED in setting up a marketing complex in a remote area should not go in vain and urged the villagers to avail the facility provided at their doorstep.
Managing director, MARCOFED Ltd., T Vikuto Zhimo and registrar of Co-operative Societies, Wepe Ritse, also addressed the public meeting.
Additional Deputy Commissioner Longkhim, Kikumsangla Jamir, chaired the programme.
