A mass checking drive was conducted in Zunheboto Town under the provisions of the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act (COTPA), 2003. The operation was carried out by the District Administration in collaboration with the Drugs Control Administration, District No Tobacco Club, and Dobashis, with assistance from the police personnel.
The surprise inspection focused on areas within a 100-yard radius of education institutions premises, in accordance with COTPA regulations which prohibit the sale of tobacco products near educational institutions. During the drive, several retail shops and vendors were inspected for illegal possession and sale of tobacco products.
As a result of the inspection, authorities seized a total of 12 packets of Shikhar, 16 packets of Talab, 31 packets of cigarettes, 1 packet of Rajnigandha, 13 packets of Kheni, 7 packets of Gul, and 7 packets of Signature-branded tobacco products. The confiscated items were later transported to the town’s designated dumping zone, where they were safely disposed of and incinerated.
Officials stated that the primary aim of the drive was to ensure a tobacco-free environment around education institutions and to raise public awareness about the harmful effects of tobacco consumption.
They also warned that similar enforcement actions would continue in the future to maintain compliance with tobacco control laws.
