Massive damage of natural forest owing to Jhum cultivation

Stressing on the back drop of the fast emerging trends of the people on the massive destruction of the natural forest for Jhum cultivation, especially practices in the tribal zone BDO Jalukie Zeiba urged upon the people to come forward to protect and preserve it and make it more conducive for the future generation to live in.

He was speaking at the Jalukie Valley Inter- School Essay and Drawing Competition on ‘Environmental Awareness’ which was held at Govt. High School, Jalukie on Saturday. This programme is for the first of its kind Organised by Jalukie Valley Youth Organisation (JVYO).

While delivering his speech, Zeiba, BDO Jalukie, who grace the felicitation session as chief guest, emphasizing on the model type of land used, he encouraged the people to concentrate on   trees-plantation with different types of species in other to regenerate the degraded forest to productive forest.

‘At present we are witnessing the rise in temperatures, fast rate of thawing and melting away of polar ices caps, rise in the sea level and submersion of low lying islands in the Sundarban’ he said, while quoting the symptoms of  deforestation from local abuses to the global climate change.

Rampaukai Mpom,the Ranges officer Jalukie, who also spoke on the programme, stressed on the importance of the Bio-diversity, he said  that all human being depend on it for survival but unfortunately much have being lost in the process of development and by wanton deforestation.

He also disclosed that Nagaland and all of the North-East has been placed as the 24 ‘Hot Pot’ of the world due to its richness in Bio-diversity ranging from Gene to Species he further said that a few years back, the NBPGR (National Bureau of plant Genetic Resource) also declared Nagaland as a Germplasm pool of different cultivated crops and economic species.

“Although hunting & pouching is officially banned, these activities still at large and could not be contained” adding that if we continue these, we are going for a doom, he cautioned. He further encourage and called upon the people to co-operate the different agencies campaigning for Bio-diversity conservation and   appreciated the eco club  who can be the forerunner and educate the common people in creating the environmental awareness at the school level. 

Others who spok in the occasion were Akangna Iheilung Headmistress GHS Jalukie, Chuba Ao BDO Tening, some dignitaries who also attend the event include Namheu SDO Power Jalukie, Asst Conservator of Forest Ngwalwa, President town Women Welfare Society, Officials from Agriculture and Allied Departments.

It may be mention that all together 50 students from various schools participate in the event, which was sponsored by Range Office Jalukie.

The Programme was chaired by Machigwang, Finance Secretary JVYO, and invocation by Amongna Mpom Pastor Local Baptist Church, while special Number was presented Kingdom Steward.
