So far nine master-plans for Kohima, Dimapur, Wokha, Mokokchung, Mon, Tuensang, Zunheboto, Phek and Kiphire have been prepared and which are partially implemented. “However, in view of the rapid expansion of several towns in the state, the department is initiating for revision of these master-plans in a phased manner,” states the Annual Administrative Report of the Urban Development department tabled at the state assembly session recently.

The primary task of rural development is preparation of master-plans for proper development of towns, the report said. During 2008-09, the department had commenced boundary reconnaissance survey activities and preliminary studies for preparation of the ‘Kohima Master Plan 2030’. In view of the relentless increase in population in the capital town coupled with dwindling land space for proper planned development within it, there has been a snowball effect on the surrounding settlements and villages which have witnessed a spurt in various development activities in recent years, the report said.

“This is mainly due to the impetus caused by ambitious expansion activities of various departments, institutions, etc. who have been compelled to move out of the congested capital town and find more suitable sites away from Kohima town with sufficient land for various activities and programmes,” the report said.

In view of the thrust for development already initiated in several areas, it is envisaged that the Draft Kohima Master Plan 2030 will cover extended areas on the periphery of several adjoining villages such as Meriema and Chedema among others. This is to ensure that a planned and balanced framework is provided for the inevitable process of urbanisation already set in motion.
