
Mokokchung, February 4 (MExN): In the aftermath of the fire at the MMC Shopping complex on February 3, the Mokokchung Chamber of Commerce & Industry (MCCI) wrote to the Deputy Commissioner, Mokokchung, presenting a charter of demands. The demands included conducting a thorough investigation to ascertain cause of the fire and making the findings public, providing immediate relief to the affected traders and implementing stringent fire safety measures across the district to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
It called for developing a comprehensive compensation plan in collaboration with the MCCI and other stakeholders “ensuring fair and timely reimbursement for losses incurred.” It added that the rehabilitation measures should include temporary relocation assistance to help the affected traders resume business as soon as possible, financial aid to support them in rebuilding their livelihoods and streamlining processes for obtaining the necessary permits to facilitate business continuity.
“We urge the government to take all necessary steps to alleviate the suffering of the affected traders and help them rebuild their livelihoods,” the MCCI said.
Per the MCCI letter, the fire inflicted severe damage to more than 120 shops, atleast 70 of which were completely destroyed.
