MDFA enter crucial, knockout stage

Mokokchung | October 19 : The last match of the group stages of the 17th Mokokchung District Football Association (MDFA) Trophy 2011 was played today between Rising Star Sporting Club and Marepkong Youth Association. Nokyim (Jersey No.9) of Marepkong netted the lone goal of the match in the 27th minute of the game that helped his team top Group D. Marepkong’s win today sealed the fate of last year’s finalists and formidable contingent Moanungsang Memorial SC who have failed to make it to the knock-out stages. A draw in today’s match would have seen Moanungsung MSC through meanwhile a win for Rising Star would have ensured them a berth in the knock-out stages. Marepkong YA’s win over Rising Star SC today turned out to be in favour of Tenyimi Union Mokokchung who now progresses to the knock-out stages as Group D runner-up.
Defending Champions and strong title contenders Fusion SC topped Group A. Fusion SC and Kichutip SA qualified for the knock-out stages from Group A. Suyim Sports Society (B) topped Group B and, along with Longpa SC as the group runner-up, qualified for the quarter finals. From Group C, Zonipang SA and Ozzy’s Mokokchung qualified for the quarter finals as group toppers and runner-up respectively.
The tournament has so far seen 18 players being cautioned (yellow card). Marepkong’s Tongpangkokba is the only player to have been sent-off (red card) in the tournament so far during their group stage meeting with Moanungsang MSC.
The first quarter-final match of the tournament will be played between Fusion SC and Ozzys Mokokchung on November 20 at Imkongmeren Sports Complex, Mokokchung beginning 1:30 PM. Imtingangshi Longkumer, Superintendent of Prinsons, Mokokchung will be the guest of honour of the match. Match allowances will be awarded to all teams in all matches from the quarter-finals.
Bendangsunep (Jersey No.7) of Fusion SC is the leading goal-scorer of the tournament with 4 goals in his kitty so far. Sentichuba (Jersey No.18) and Moayanger (Jersey No.11), both from Kichutip SA, are also in line for the highest goals scorer of the tournament honour after having scored 3 goals each so far.
The organizers of the tournament have also arranged musicians to entertain the spectators during the half-time break of every match from the quarter-finals on.
MDFA Trophy is the highest footballing event in Mokokchung district and this year’s champions will win a record Rs.1 lakh as prize money. Runner-up will be awarded Rs.60,000 and the two semi-finalists will win Rs.15,000 each. The final match of the current 17th edition of the tournament will be played on October 28.
