The much awaited MDFA Trophy 2017 got underway today at Imkongmeren Sports Complex with Merentoshi R. Jamir, Parliamentary Secretary, Social Welfare, Government of Nagaland, kicking off the tournament.
Being the jubilee year of the Mokokchung District Football Associaton (MDFA), this year’s edition of MDFA trophy will see a new trophy with enhanced prize money for the champion. Fifteen football clubs will be vying for the MDFA trophy 2017.
Speaking as the Chief Guest, Merentoshi congratulated the MDFA for achieving the milestone of 25 years and pioneering in the field of football by encouraging young talents and promoting the sport. He encouraged the organizers to continue to work towards building unity among the Ao people through sports.
Merentoshi also requested the supporters of different football teams to support their teams in a constructive manner. Lack of Infrastructure, he viewed, was the main reason why the standard of football is not growing in our state. He said that sports plays an important role in maintaining unity and that it is through sports that we make friendship with one another.
The welcome address at the opening ceremony was given by L. Yanger, Convenor, MDFA organising committee.
Merepkong beat Rongpang Reju
The first match of the MDFA Trophy 2017 played between Rongpang Reju and Y/A Merepkong saw the latter winning by a solitary goal.
The goal came early on in the 8th minute of the match after the goalkeeper parried an attempt from the Merepkong midfield. Quick as a flash, Arenjenba (Jersey No 17) pounced on the rebound and slotted the ball into the net.
Rongpang Reju tried tirelessly to equalize with vicious attacking play as Merepkong went into the defensive mode to safeguard their precious goal and despite Rongpang Reju having 60% of the possession, Merepkong were able to hold on to their 1-0 lead.
