Mon, February 17 (MExN): Mon District Legal Services Authority (MDLSA) organized an orientation-cum-training of Para Legal Volunteers (PLVs) here on February 16 at the DC conference hall.
Members from the District Administration, SDPO Mon, Konyak Mothers’ Association (KNSK), and officers from Labour Department participated in the programme.
In his introductory remark, Phuleto Yeptho, Civil Judge (Jr.), Mon, and also Secretary, MDLSA highlighted the purpose of the orientation programme, which is to create legal awareness among the public, especially people who are neo literate and the marginalized section. He also discussed on Rights of Prisoners and Rights of Accused Persons in criminal case. The basic rights of individual is safeguarded by the Constitution, he stated, adding even an accused in criminal cases has the right to avail basic human rights such as right to speedy trial, free legal aid, right against torture in prison or other inhuman treatment.
The programme had special focus on the seven new schemes launched by the National Legal Services Authority, which was introduced and presented by Nino Iralu, Member Secretary, Nagaland State Legal Services Authority.
During the PLVs training, following topics were covered by respective resource persons: ‘Children & Women Rights’ by Easter Aye, Panel Lawyer, Mon DLSA; ‘Consumer Right & Right to Information’ by Dominic Kaiba, Panel Lawyer; ‘Rights of Prisoners’ by Phuleto Yeptho, Civil Judge (Jr.)-cum-Secretary, Mon District Legal Services; ‘Lok Adalat & Victim Compensation Act’ by Sheanyou Konyak, Panel Lawyer.
Special note on Roles and Responsibilities of Para Legal Volunteers and in relation to PLVs in other countries who are working with war victims in Syria and UN was delivered by Mayang Lima, District & Sessions Judge, Mon District-cum-Chairman, Mon District Legal Services Authority.
ADC Mon also highlighted the situation faced by the people of Mon district, especially on protection of children with regard to trafficking within the district and backlog of bank related cases which is a huge hindrance for new entrepreneurs. He encouraged to create more awareness on Lok Adalat.
Asst. Labour Commissioner, Mon also stressed on social security schemes for unorganized sector and their privileges and benefits. During the interaction, KNSK President appreciated the activities of MDLSA and PLVs and urged the participants to collaborate with stakeholders and to check on child labour and trafficking.
