Nagaland Governor, PB Acharya, today said media in Nagaland should play a proactive role towards empowering and educating the citizens and also act as watchdog against corruption.

The governor said the media (print and online) have a huge challenge not only to empower and educate the people but also face a herculean task in exposing corruption and social injustices as it takes courage to expose them. The governor who inaugurated the office of ‘Nagaland Today’, a new English daily likely to hit the stands by September, said Naga people have to address their own problems.

Acharya said even after 70 years of statehood, Nagaland has failed to showcase its positive sides including the unique identity and vibrant culture of various Naga tribes. He also said the state has failed to capitalize on the abundant natural resources and remained dependent on Delhi.

He urged the media in Nagaland to dispel the general misconception people in mainland India have of Nagaland as a state infested with “insurgency” and to highlight and disseminate the positive side of the state and its people.

On the other hand, Acharya also lauded the media in Nagaland and said that during his four years as governor of the state, he observed that “our newspapers are doing a wonderful job, a better job than the political parties.”

Meanwhile sharing the visions of Nagaland Today, the Publisher and Managing Director, Yudang Ao said, “Freedom and pluralism of communication is the basic requirement for reliable journalism. Nagaland Today would want to communicate openly in a way that respects pluralism and takes the opinions of others into consideration in all of our interactive situations.”

He also shared that at Nagaland Today exist to make communities stronger. “This commitment requires that we serve communities on all fronts, in some familiar ways and some new ways. We, not only will give people content that's informative, fun and engaging, but also give them a way to act on that content. And we will provide all members of a community - people, organizations, government, businesses - with the right information it needs to thrive.”
