Meghalaya Govt approves Rs 125 crore to improve sports infrastructure

The Meghalaya government has approved Rs 125 crore to improve the Jawaharlal Nehru stadium and to create certain sports facilities.

“We had a meeting of the sports department and discussed important sports infrastructure that need to be created keeping in mind the National Games as well as infrastructure in rural areas," Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma informed after chairing the meeting on Thursday.

Sangma said that there were also proposals for building up infrastructure in different rural areas amounting close to another Rs 100 crore. He however informed that since the list was not complete, the meeting has not entirely gone through and as such has not approved it.

Sangma also informed that the PA Sangma Stadium at Tura is being funded by the Ministry of Minority Affairs at Rs 125 crore

“These two major projects have been cleared and it is part of the State government's preparation for the National Games,” he said.

Stating that sports is one area where the youth need to excel in, he said that it should be ensured that more importance and opportunity is given to the youth. In this context, he said that infrastructure is ‘very critical’.

“This is being done keeping the National Games in mind, and in general, this will help give facilities to our youngsters in order to excel and so that they get a chance to improve the skills that they have in different sports,” the Chief Minister stated.
