Mengu Village implements strict ban on hunting, fishing

Chümoukedima, November 29 (MExN): The Mengu Village Council in Chümoukedima District has issued a strict directive prohibiting all forms of hunting by outsiders within its jurisdiction, citing increased activity by hunters in the area.

According to a press release from Village Chairman Thejangulie Kire, any individual found violating this ban will face severe action under the Village Regulations Act. Penalties will include the seizure of arms, hunting materials, and any vehicles used in the commission of the offence.

The notice clarified that after the village council levies its penalties, confiscated items such as guns and vehicles will be handed over to the concerned authorities for further legal action, which could lead to additional punishment under the law of the land.

The council has also appealed to local residents, urging them not to invite or bring any outsiders for hunting or any such activities which was prohibited by the council.

The directive also imposed a strict ban on fishing using batteries in rivers and tributaries. Violators will be fined a minimum of Rs 5,000, and all seized materials “will not be return at all cost to the owner for violation of the village authority.”

Furthermore, the collection of forest products, including firewood, vegetables, and wood and bamboo for construction, from others' properties is strictly prohibited. Defaulters will face a fine of Rs 20,000 or more, and the collected products along with any vehicles used will be confiscated. These items will later be handed over to the concerned authorities with a “negative remark.”

Failure to comply will result in a cancellation drive starting from January 2026, as per a resolution passed in a General Body meeting.

Ahead of the festive season, the village has scheduled a general social work on December 9, 2025. All villagers are requested to be present without fail. Further arrangements for the event will be intimated later.
