Dimapur, May 28 (MExN): Menstrual Initiative Nagaland observed World Menstrual Hygiene Day with the theme ‘Together for a #PeriodFriendlyWorld’ on May 28. An update received here stated that the theme emphasises the need for collective action to ensure menstruation does not limit access to education, health or opportunities, and to break down stigma and taboos associated with menstruation.

On the occasion, Menstrual Initiative Nagaland distributed 750 free sanitary pads and hygiene products along with menstruation educational pamphlets among young girls and women in Dimapur, Chümoukedima and Kohima in collaboration with Women Helpline 181, Nagaland.

Loreni Sophia, Advisor of CHI, emphasised that menstrual products need to be more accessible and affordable to decrease period poverty. “Also, governments, decision-makers, and educators must take menstrual hygiene and education more seriously,” she asserted adding, “state-wide sensitization and menstrual awareness need to improve overall.”

It was informed that CHI awareness programmes educate young girls and women on the importance of menstrual hygiene management such as use clean and absorbent menstrual products like cloth pads, pads, menstrual cups and tampons. “Change them regularly to avoid discomfort and prevent infections. Ensure that you dispose of used products responsibly and maintain good personal hygiene by washing your genital area with water,” it added.
