MGM College Edu Depart visits palliative care centre

Dimapur, May 7 (MExN): The MGM College, Dimapur, 6th and 2nd Semester Education Honours students, along with Nimmi Varghese, Asst Professor, visited the St Joseph Palliative Care Trust in Chümoukedima, a project of the Catholic Diocese of Kohima in conjunction with the Medical Sisters of St. Joseph.

The Centre presently includes 10 patients with various ailments who are entirely cared for by the sisters and a few caretakers. Sr Divya, the in-charge, informed the students on the fundamentals of palliative care, including its operation and stages.

The students learned about terminal patients and how they are taken care of. Counselling for such patients and families was underlined, and it was emphasised that the institute provides it. Sr Divya further emphasised that it is a charitable organisation and that there are no criteria for receiving the service.

The main objective of the establishment was stated as to provide care, support, help patients and family manage illness symptoms, render psycho-social and spiritual support. The students were asked to spread awareness about palliative care, volunteer in such institutes and be a beam of light in the struggling world to people of diverse emotional and spiritual needs.
