MGM College inaugurates Peer Mediation

Dimapur, November 20 (MExN): MGM College inaugurated Peer Mediation on November 19 under the aegis of Peace Channel.


Vitono Haralu Project Coordinator, Peace Channel was the resource person for the programme. She shared that Peer Mediation is a problem solving by youth with youth. “It is a process by which students help their peers to solve their issues non-violently.”


It is a process where two or more students involved in a dispute meet in a private, safe and confidential setting to work out problems with the assistance of a trained student mediator. Peer Mediation is one of the best ways of resolving conflict in educational Institutions.


Haralu said its main objective was to enhance the skills and techniques of an individual in resolving conflict in different levels, while adding that it develops the confidence and leadership qualities of the peer mediator.


It helps young people to articulate their feelings and solve it collectively, tackle issues such as bullying, discrimination and racism, a press release from Alan Paul stated.


Haralu encouraged the participants to believe in one’s self and pursue to possess qualities to be peace makers.


“Peace building is a process and to be a peer mediator, one needs to understand conflict and to intervene in conflict situations starting from our homes to our society and learn to manage conflicts, ” she added. Earlier, Durga, teaching faculty, MGM College introduced the session and welcomed the staff of Peace Channel while vote of thanks was delivered by Fuchamo. The programme was attended by 30 students.
