Nagaland Horticulture & Border Affairs Advisor, Mhathung Yanthan visited Oyster & Shiitake mushroom farming project at Pfutseromi village in Phek district on August 17. Impressed by such project, he assured to extend all possible help to take it forward.

This Oyster & Shiitake mushroom farming was taken up by Tyrannus Community M.P.C.S Ltd.

The Society was registered in 1991.

Mushroom cultivation was introduced to the Society by Horticulture Department, Nagaland and Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) Porba in 2011, which intrigued the Society to cultivate Oyster mushroom in 2012 and Shiitake mushroom in 2013.

However, the Society was unable to find sustainable market and also inability to procure dehydrators and storage facilities and the production was halted, said Tyrannus Community M.P.C.S Ltd chairman Samuel Ritse.

The Society resumed Oyster mushroom cultivation in August and Shiitake in September 2021.

“Presently, we have 650 cylinders of oyster and 1200 approx. logs of Shiitake,” Ritse said. Dr. Sosang Longkumer, Director, Konger Agritech, Dimapur, guided the Society and supplied Oyster and Shiitake mushroom dowel spawn.

Ritse also highlighted some major factors faced by the farmers in the form of lack of storage facility and market linkage, which discourage farmers to produce in large quantity.

“Unlike other years, today, we see our government uplifting the entrepreneurs and farmers, which is an encouraging sign,” he said and appreciated the Horticulture Department for the recent achievement in exporting Kiwi, King Chilli, etc.
The Society was hopeful that the government would create a network for them.

Ritse said that the Society would continue its activities with special focus on Shiitake mushroom.

“We request and seek unflinching support and guidance from various sectors so that we could generate income, increase the state economy and create employment for our youth,” Ritse added.
