The Chakhesang community came together to celebrate the traditional Tsükhenye festival at Chizami under Phek district on April 24. The festival was organised by the Chakhesang Public Organisation (CPO) in collaboration with the Department of Tourism, Nagaland, and hosted by the Khuzha Tere Public Organisation (KTPO).
Gracing the celebration as special guest, Thejao Vihienuo, President of the Angami Public Organisation, lauded the Chakhesang community for preserving its rich traditions. He called for renewed efforts to safeguard Naga cultural identity and cautioned against its dilution and commercialisation.
“Mini Hornbill festivals in the rural areas represent the true essence of Naga traditions,” said Vihienuo, while expressing concern over the commercial direction of the Hornbill Festival at Kisama. “We must ensure our culture remains original and undistorted,” he added, urging the Tourism Department to strengthen support for grassroots festivals like Mini Hornbill.
Chief host and Minister for Power & Parliamentary Affairs, KG Kenye, underscored the vanishing work culture in society. “A productive life is one that upholds dignity of labour,” he said, warning that neglecting work culture could have long-term repercussions.
“Our culture must not be abused. Don’t commercialise or modify it—preserve it in its pure form,” Kenye stated. He reminded the gathering of the virtues inherited from Naga ancestors—honesty, bravery, and hard work—and stressed their relevance in contemporary society.
Earlier in the programme, CPO President Vezühü Keyho delivered the welcome address. Cultural highlights included a folk song by Matikhrü Village, a folk dance by Phüsachodü Village, a solo performance by Litsüku Lohe, and a cultural display by the Children Music Ministry of SBCC.
The event was chaired by Khelo Lasuh, while Welhipe Chiero, President of KTPO, delivered the vote of thanks. The act of blessing was pronounced by Rev. Mese Rhakho, and the closing prayer by Pastor Diwetso Lohe of Sumi Village Baptist Church.
Festival highlights also featured Taketa Chele, Khushü Kewe, Thoyi, and Chüketi, with Pupetso Wezah and Thekeveu Tsizüh compering the event.
