The mysterious disappearance of an Indian Air Force (IAF) officer Noktempong Jamir (26) of Nagaland on October 7 in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, remains a mystery with investigations yet to come up with any concrete conclusions. Flight Lieutenant Jamir’s family members and relatives have gone down to Coimbatore to enquire on his whereabouts.
Talking to The Morung Express over telephone, Jamir’s sister Akum who is now in Coimbatore said that the results of ongoing search has thrown up nothing. “Nothing can be said and done until we find a suspect. And the police are yet to trace any suspect. But the investigation is still going on”, Akum said.
On part of the family a cousin of the officer, who stays in Mumbai is in Coimbatore and is assisting the police and the IAF in finding Jamir. “The police are doing their best to find him (Jamir)”, Tia, Jamir’s cousin said.
The city police, probing the case are expected to conduct a re-verification at the IAF Administrative College campus on Monday reported Express News Service. Though the police ‘do not see any mischief on the campus’, based on their preliminary investigation, they are planning to inquire 10 more trainees, who had come from different states to the college. A case has been registered with the Race Course police and a team, led by Inspector Soundarrajan, is investigating. However, Akum said that she was unaware of progress in the investigation.
The unmarried officer, is informed by the force as a man of good character. “He seemed to be more attached to the family. He had taken only three days’ leave since he joined IAF. And all these three days, he stayed only at his village in Nagaland,” the Inspector added.
“The IAF has no investigative powers, but still they are trying to find him out through their sources,” police said adding that a case has been registered based on the complaint lodged by Wing Commander Sreenivasan. Jamir’s disappearance was reported to the civil and police administration in Tamil Nadu almost immediately, by the force. Special teams from the force’s vigilance and intelligence units are informed to have been deployed to investigate the matter.
According to a report in The Telegraph, the air force has ruled out any possibility of abduction. But certain sections of the IAF are skeptical. “We cannot rule out anything at this juncture. We are getting regular updates on the investigation which is being carried out by our agencies and the civil administration there,” a source said.
Noktempong Jamir (26) is the third son from among five children of Marchiba Jamir from Changtongya village residing in Changtongya town under Mokokchung village.
He came to the campus on October 5. Jamir, in fact, did his four-year course in engineering from Coimbatore before applying for the air force. Jamir was posted at the Mohanbari Air Force base in Dibrugarh. He left the base on October 1 for a training stint in Coimbatore. Air Force sources said Jamir went to Dimapur by train on October 2 and stayed there with a friend. The next day, he went to Guwahati and took a flight to Coimbatore. It may be noted that the officer had gone missing since October 7, when he was under a 21-day training at the Coimbatore IAF Administrative College, sources said.
