Mizo civil societies protest against ‘illegal immigrants’

  Newmai News Network Aizawl | October 29 Civil society organisations in Mizoram joined Delhi Mizo Zirlai Pawl (DMZP) in staging demonstration against illegal immigrants in Aizawl on October 28. The event was held near Vanapa Hall, where leaders of Mizoram civil bodies and student bodies expressed their resentment against the "presence" of illegal immigrants in Northeast India, especially in Mizoram. They also slammed politicians and governments who "rule" Mizoram for a number of years for their negligence to the "influx of foreigners" just for vote bank.   The event was organized by Joint NGO Coordination Committee comprising Central Young Mizo Association (YMA), Mizo Zirlai Pawl (MZP), Mizo Students’ Union (MSU), Mizoram Upa Pawl (MUP), and Mizo Hmeichhia Insuihkhawm Pawl (MHIP).   Addressing the demonstration here, Central YMA general secretary Lalhmachhuana said that Mizoram has been facing crisis of "influx of foreigners" in the state since long.   He said that the state government must frame “Foreigner Tribunal” and constitute “Task Force” as already directed by the Central government to check the influx of illegal immigrants in the state.   Newly elected Mizo Zirlai Pawl (MZP) president L. Ramdinliana Renthlei called for the unity of all Mizo tribes to safeguard and protect Mizoram which has been inherited from Mizo forefathers. He said that the MZP would never allow foreigners to share the rights and privileges of the indigenous people.   MSU adviser PC Lalrinhlua appealed to the state government to abolish 44 villages “established illegally by illegal immigrants” in southern Mizoram and asked the state government to deport them to their "homeland".   Former Central YMA President Lalbiakzuala said the Joint NGO Coordination Committee will continue to take stringent measures for abolition of Chakma Autonomous District Council (CADC) which was constituted “illegally” in 1972 along with Mara Autonomous District Council (MADC) and Lai Autonomous District Council (LADC). He added that the resolution passed by the Central YMA for abolition of CADC will not affect the existence of MADC and LADC and appealed to all Mizo tribes to lend support to the NGOs in their fight to abolish the CADC.   In Delhi, the demonstration was held at Mizoram House, Vasant Vihar under the aegis of Delhi Mizo Zirlai Pawl (DMZP) and Central YMA. Among others, the event was attended by Central YMA president Vanlalruata, Central YMA vice president R. Lalngheta, MSU president RB Lalmalsawma, MSU general secretary Lalthanzuala, lone Rojya Sabha member from Mizoram Ronald Sapa Tlau, Prof. Joy Pachuau (Jawaharlal Nehru University), senior advocate (Supreme Court) Upamanyu Hazarika and Adviser to Arunachal Pradesh Students’ Union Delhi (ASUD) Romjir Rakshap.   The rally also passed a resolution demanding the Mizoram government and the Central government to take measures for restriction of influx of foreigners and deport them to their "homeland". Among others, the leaders participating at the demonstration also demanded the constitution of investigation team involving central government, state governments and various civil organizations to study crisis of illegal immigrants in Northeast India, district level monitoring mechanism to monitor birth & death registration and to tighten security measures along the Indo-Bangladesh border.
