Newmai News Network Aizawl | November 9 Former Mizoram chief minister and Mizo National Front (MNF) chief, Zoramthanga on Friday said that his party will re-impose "total prohibition" in Mizoram by lifting The Mizoram Liquor (Prohibition & Control) or MLPC Act, which came into force from 2015, if the party comes to power after the state assembly elections. Elections to the 40- member Mizoram assembly will be held on November 28 and the results will be declared on December 11. Speaking to reporters after filing his nomination paper for the upcoming assembly polls on Friday, Zoramthanga alleged that the opening of liquor shops has increased consumption of liquor among policemen and youths due to which it has greatly impacted the Mizo society. “Definitely yes, our party will lift the MLPC Act and re-impose total prohibition in the state,” he said, adding that drinking liquor has disturbed many families creating enormous problems in the society. He also alleged that many youths and policemen died due to consumption of liquor. The MLPC Act was introduced by Lal Thanhawla led Congress government in 2015 replacing The Mizoram Liquor Total Prohibition Act, 1995 introduced by the MNF government which was enforced in the state for 18 years between 1997 and 2015. Meanwhile, MNF sitting legislator from Aizawl West-II, Lalruatkima said that his party will introduce new liquor law to replace the existing MLPC Act, if it comes to power. He then alleged that the "Mizo society and the religion of the people are under threat due to misrule of the Congress and opening of liquor shops".
