Mizo Peace Accord Day today

Aizawl, June 29 (NNN): Mizoram will celebrate the 31st anniversary of the historic Mizo Peace Accord Day or Remna Ni on Friday. The state government of Mizoram has declared public holiday to mark the celebration. All government offices, educational institutions and commercial banks will remain closed on this day and special programme would be organized by different political parties and groups to mark the celebration of Remna Ni across the state.   Meanwhile, Mizoram Governor Lt. Gen. Nirbhay Sharma greeted and extended his best wishes for a prosperous future to the people of Mizoram on the occasion of the 31st Peace Accord Day.   The Governor urged the people to remember in great reverence those who laid down their lives for the cause of peace and harmony in Mizoram. In his message, Sharma invited the people of Mizoram to utilize this peace and harmony to the fullest on the special occasion.   He complimented the people of Mizoram for maintaining this hard-earned peace in the state and viewed that Mizoram has shown progress in the last 31 years since the peace accord was signed between government of India and the erstwhile underground Mizo National Front (MNF) on June 30, 1986. The immediate dividend of this agreement was conferment of statehood on the Union Territory of Mizoram to become the 23rd state of India on February 20, 1987, he added.   Further terming the youth as the “future” of the State, the Governor urged them to follow a healthy lifestyle, take active part in the ‘Healthy Mizoram Campaign’, and abstain from “vices” such as abuse of drugs, alcohol and tobacco.
