
Mokokchung, September 28 (MExN): The much anticipated Mokokchung Inter Club Badminton Championship 2017 organized by the Mokokchung District Badminton Association got underway here today at the Indoor Badminton Stadium, Imkongmeren Sports Complex with Dimapur based Naga businessman Imli Jamir as guest of honour.
A total of ten teams representing eight clubs are competing in the championship, dubbed the only badminton tournament of its kind in the region.
At the inaugural function of the tournament, president of MDBA Er.Toshi delivered the welcome address while the oath taking ceremony was conducted by the tournament’s chief referee Bendang Chang.
Felicitation of young achievers was also conducted as part of the inaugural function where Imnuksungla, Tiatula, Kilangkumba and Chunglitong were felicitated for winning Bronze medal in the junior category representing Nagaland at the North East Zone Inter State Championship 2017 held at Aizwal from September 5 to 8. Bronze medal winners in Junior Boys Doubles in the open category of the same tournament, Kilangkumba and Chunglitong, were also felicitated.
U15 Girls Singles winners Watisungla and Imlikumla and U15 Girls Doubles runners up Imlirenla and Sagtina at the recently held Catch Them Young Tournament in Kohima were also felicitated.
The guest of honour after making his customary remarks declared the tournament open.
Golden Feathers from Chungtia village, Team Bendangsunep from Mokokchung Town, defending champions The Shuttlers from Chuchuyimpang village, L4 from Impur, Longsa Sporting Club, Native Shuttlers Association from Mopungchuket village along with debutants Soyim Smashers from Ungma village and Badminton Association Khensa village are the eight clubs playing in the competition. Native Shuttlers Association and The Shuttlers from Chuchuyimpang village are represented by two teams each.
The tournament is being played in a league-cum-knock out basis under seven categories and will conclude on September 30. Most of the top badminton players of Nagaland are here playing in the championship representing the various clubs.
