Mkg Police arrest cyber criminal in Rs 3 crore fake court order scam

Mokokchung Police arrested a cyber crime fraudster for allegedly orchestrating a racket involving fake court orders.

Mokokchung, February 25 (MExN): Mokokchung Police have arrested a cyber crime fraudster from Shillong for allegedly orchestrating a racket involving fake court orders, duping victims of over Rs 3 crore.

The accused, identified as Anupam Kumar Singh, a resident of Siwan, Bihar and currently living in Laitumkhrah, Shillong was apprehended on February 20 by a Special Investigation Team (SIT).

According to a press release from the PRO, Mokokchung Police, the case came to light following a complaint from a staff member of the Mokokchung District Court. The complaint stated that the Court had received an email containing a face order, purportedly issued by a “Judicial Magistrate First Class, Mokokchung

“It is pertinent to clarify that there is no post of Judicial Magistrate First Class in Mokokchung. The document bore fake seals and stamps and was allegedly used for fraudulent purposes,” the PRO stated. 

Upon receipt of the complaint, Mokokchung Police initiated an investigation into the matter. Verification with the Court authorities confirmed that the court orders, seals, stamps and designations reflected in the document were fabricated and had not been issued by the District Court. 

On finding prima facie evidence of fraudulent activities, a Criminal case was registered on 14/01/2026 vide PS-I Case No. 004/26 under Sections 319(2)/338 BNS read with Section 66 D of the IT Act.
“Through technical analysis, examination of call detail records, and scrutiny of bank statements, the suspect was identified and traced to Shillong,” the PRO added.

The SIT, led by SDPO (HQ) Aekant Jain, IPS, and OC PS-I Vikeheto Kennao, after obtaining a warrant from the Chief Judicial Magistrate, Mokokchung, proceeded to Shillong. With the assistance of the SP East Khasi Hills and SP Shillong (City), the accused was apprehended.

Investigations revealed that a sophisticated cyber fraud had been committed wherein the accused had fraudulently used fake police reports purportedly issued by OC PS-II Mokokchung and fabricated court orders of the Magistrate First Class, Mokokchung with fake seals, stamps and signatures. “The accused also misused a genuine government email ID to deceive banks into freezing the accounts of innocent persons and subsequently directing the transfer of the frozen funds into mule accounts operated by him.”

The accused is currently in Mokokchung police custody. Further investigation is underway to identify additional accused persons, trace the money trail, and recover the defrauded amount, it stated.

Citizens and financial institutions have been advised to verify the authenticity of any such official communication before acting upon them. “Any similar incidents should be immediately reported to the Police.”

The Superintendent of Police, Mokokchung, has commended the SIT for the successful operation and appreciating the professionalism in the discharge of their duties.
