Mkg police confirms arrest of sexual abuse accused

A day after news reports of a sexual abuse case in Mokokchung were published, the Mokokchung police on July 4 issued a press statement officially confirming it.  The press release issued by the Mokokchung Superintendent of Police stated that a written complaint was received on July 1 at Police Station-II “alleging that two minors have been sexually assaulted/abused” on several occasions since last year by one person. 


Based on the complaint, a case under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act was registered and investigation taken up. Subsequently, a 65-year old man was arrested later that day. 


After conducting necessary formalities, including COVID-19 tests as dictated by the pandemic protocol, the release said that he was forwarded to judicial custody. His identity was not disclosed. 


It added that the victims were handed over to their parents after completing the necessary COVID-19 and other medical examinations “and observing all juvenile guidelines.”


The victims, both male, were said to be less than 16 years of age.


Meanwhile, other sources said that the accused was a deacon of a prominent Baptist church in Mokokchung.
