Mkg unites in protest against rape

Mokokchung, October 13 (MExN): Hundreds of school children, women and men today took out a rally against a rape incident that happened on the night of October 10, 2011 at Mokokchung. The rape incident involving a middle-aged man and a minor girl came to full public notice only on Thursday, when some local news dailies carried the news and announcements about the protest rally jointly organized by the Watsu Mungdang and the Eastern Naga Women Organisation (Mokokchung) was made through Public Address Systems in the town.
It is learnt that on October 10, 2011 one person identified as Bendangwapang (30 years), son of Koranuken of Mopungchuket village residing at Arkong ward raped a 13-year-old Chang girl, a class VII student of government Town Middle School Mokokchung who is living at Artang ward Mokokchung with her brother and sister.
It is reported that the Mokokchung Town Chang Union (MTCU), on learning about the incident, summoned the accused on Wednesday evening where the accused confessed to his crime. Accordingly, the MTCU took action as per their Resolution No. 16.
Today’s rally started from the Imkongmeren Sports Complex, Mokokchung and the rallyist mostly school children carried placards and converged at the Police Point (main town). President of ENWO Mokokchung, Lisepila chaired the proceedings at the rally which was also addressed by representatives of AKM, Watsu Mungdang, Eastern Naga People’s Union Mokokchung and Eastern Naga Students’ Union Mokokchung. All the speakers at today’s rally strongly condemned the crime.
Ao Senden, Sumi Union Mokokchung and Lotha Union Mokokchung and Tenyimi Union Mokokchung were also given time to address the rally but failed to turn up. The accused Bendangwapang Longkumer, who was made to wear a placard with the words “I am a rapist”, was made to read out a statement declaring his crime five times over to the gathered people.
“I admit my crime before ENWO, ENSUM, AKM, Watsu Mungdang and the general public present and also admit that I have committed the crime with my full conscious,” declared the accused at the rally, “I therefore agree to abide the resolution no. 11 adopted by ENWO in 2008.
And the above mentioned organization can take their own course of action against me.” The accused was later handed over to police.
The ENWO (Mokokchung) also submitted a memorandum to the Deputy Commissioner Mokokchung demanding the accused to be booked under the IPC and given ‘severe punishment’ as per the rule of the law. The memorandum demanded that the accused should not be given bail under any circumstances. Besides, while asking to ensure the safety of the womenfolk, the women organizations through the memorandum requested the DC to take stern action as per the memorandum, stating otherwise “the organization will take it own course of action for which the authority will be solely be held responsible.”
