MLA Rhutso distributes umbrellas to underprivileged students in Kohima

Kohima, June 3 (MExN): The underprivileged and economically disadvantaged children enrolled in ‘Reading program’ from Forest Colony Government High School Kohima were distributed with free Umbrella today by Dr Tseilhoutuo Rhutso, MLA, 9th Kohima Town A/C at a small function organised by the Bumblebee Society and Government high school at the Forest colony community hall.

Dr. Rhutso impressed with the noble works of the Bumblebee Society volunteered to extend the helping hand further to all Government Schools within the constituency apart from the Bumblebee Society ‘Reading program’ and exhorted the children present that study is a priority, and to study hard to become contributing assets to the society by becoming a good citizen in the society and be able to become good givers in life as well.

The Free distribution of umbrella was held as part of Bumblebee Society ‘Reading Program’ and to ensure Children to attend school regularly and with dignity even during the rainy season in view of the early Monsoon season, otherwise Children mostly from marginalized families or household helpers often lacking even the most basic school necessities, walking long distance to school without basic protection from rain, sun often affecting their attendance and health.

Earlier in the program, Vikhor Tepa from Bumblebee Society, said that Bumblebee Society is a local non-profit organization dedicated to disability awareness and inclusive education, is making meaningful strides in bridging learning gaps among children from marginalized communities.

Bumblebee Society ‘Reading Program’ works with children from marginalized communities and those with disabilities since 2011.

The ‘Reading Program’ is currently operating in 2 government schools of GMS – New Minister’s hill and GHS- Forest colony with over 120 students enrolled, which is focusing on strengthening foundational literacy for students of Class 1-4 including Phonics lessons. 95% of these children are domestic helpers.

The program is tailored to suit their learning pace and background, using interactive, child-friendly methods to build confidence and foundational literacy skills.

Swedeseno Zao, Assistant headmistress, GHS Forest colony thanked Dr. Rhutso for his benevolence and shared concern for the children of the school and their welfare in her short speech.

The MLA also visited the classrooms and interacted with the students and teaching faculty of the school.
