
Imphal | October 8 : In a sudden turn of events, Manipur sitting MLA from Phungyar assembly constituency, Ukhrul District, Wungnaoshang Keishing passed on Saturday early morning at his residence here. He was 54. He is survived by his wife, two sons and two daughters. Complaining of a chest pain, the family members rushed him to hospital but he died there at around 6:45 am. Wungnaoshang Keishing was elected to the 8th Manipur Legislative Assembly on MSCP ticket by defeating the longest reigning chief minister of Manipur Rishang Keishing. He later joined Indian National Congress (INC) and also served as Minister of State (Independent Charge) Fisheries and Govt. Press from 2002-03.
Keishing held Minister of State (Independent Charge) Excise and Jail administration from 2003-2004.He was also president of Manipur Pradesh Congress Youth Committee (MPCYC) I from 1995-1998. Wungnaoshang Keishing on one occasion survived a major attack from the NSCN (IM). A number of security guards including officials were killed in the ambush laid by the NSCN (IM) cadres in Ukhrul district. The attack was believed to be of the legislators’ move to demand for Phungyar district by bifurcating Ukhrul district.
Chief Minister O Ibobi Singh accompanied by some of his ministers visited the residence of MLA Wungnaoshang to condole his death. “Wungnaoshang Keishing was a good man who always thought for the public”, Ibobi said. The Chief Minister further added that the initiative taken up by him on the demand of creation of a separate Phungyar district was only for the sake of the public. He said the demand is genuine and the matter will be informed to the concerned department. The re-organising committee is also looking into the matter, he further said. MP Thangso Baite, Speaker, I Hemochandra, Ministers, MLAs among others came to pay their respect over his untimely demise.
