While addressing the gathering, Dr Mukul Sangma said that the State Government is making all efforts to improve the health delivery system in the State by providing better infrastructure and also in ensuring easy access to health services by the people particularly in the rural areas. He said that the areas of deficiencies in the Health sector are being identified and efforts to address the issues appropriately are being made.
Dr Mukul also stated that the health indicators in the State shows that the Maternal Mortality Rate (MMR) and the Infant Mortality Rate (IMR) is on the higher side, which is a clear indication that the Health delivery system in the State needs vast improvement in many aspects particularly in terms of mother and child health.
Dr Mukul informed that the Government is making efforts to invest more in the Health sector in terms of providing better treatment facilities, availability of medicines and sufficient manpower.
While expressing concern in the congestion of patients in the Ganesh Das Hospital , Dr Mukul said that the efforts of the Government to encourage institutional delivery to expecting mothers will be in vain as long as there is a constraint in accommodation. However, he said that on completion of the new hospital building, sufficient beds will be made available to the patients and this will attract expecting mothers to deliver their babies in health institutions, thus reducing the MMR and IMR.
Meanwhile, Dr Mukul urges upon the Medical Fraternity to consider the socio economic background of the patients while they prescribe medicines to them and that they should not be driven by pharmaceutical companies when affordable medicines which serves the same purpose are available in the market.
