Mokokchung, October 3 (MExN): The Mokokchung Municipal Council (MMC) has cautioned all commercial establishments within the town against the unauthorised use of domestic LPG cylinders for business purposes.

The notification was issued by Atsungba Walling, ADC & Chief Executive Officer of the Mokokchung Municipal Council, who stated that the council has taken note of the prevalent practice among certain businesses.

The MMC has drawn attention to the Liquefied Petroleum Gas (Regulation of Supply and Distribution) Order, 2000, specifically Clause 3(c), which explicitly states that domestic LPG cylinders are strictly for household consumption and are prohibited from being used for any commercial activity. The order further highlights that contravention of this regulation is punishable under Section 7 (1) (a) (ii) of the Essential Commodities Act, 1955.

Therefore, in the interest of public safety, the MMC has directed all commercial establishments including hotels, restaurants, bakeries, tea stalls, canteens, and other business entities operating within the municipal jurisdiction to use only commercial LPG cylinders supplied by authorized distributors for their activities.

The use of domestic LPG cylinders (14.2 kg) for any commercial purpose is strictly prohibited, it stated.

The council has made it clear that any violation of this order will invite severe penal action. Any violation of this order shall invite penal action as per the Essential Commodities Act, 1955, in addition to sealing of the establishment, imposition of fines, cancellation of Trade Permit and other actions as deemed fit by the competent authority, it added.
