Mokokchung DC orders ban on wildlife trade and hunting

Mokokchung, October 18 (MExN): The Deputy Commissioner (DC) of Mokokchung, Thsuvisie Phoji, has issued an order reinforcing a strict ban on the trade and hunting of wild animals and birds across all villages and towns under the district. The order, issued on October 18, directs local authorities to ensure full compliance with the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972.

The government of Nagaland has adopted the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972, in effect since December 18, 1981, prohibiting the hunting of wild animals and birds within the territorial boundaries of the state. The only exceptions under the Act are vermin, such as certain species of rats, or cases where hunting is permitted under specific conditions as outlined in the Act. No other exceptions in terms of species or time frame are allowed.

The order highlighted that Amur Falcons, a migratory bird species, are protected under the Wildlife Protection Act. Any act of hunting, trapping, killing, or selling Amur Falcons for food or any other purpose is a criminal offense, punishable by up to three years of rigorous imprisonment or a fine of Rs 25,000, or both, under Sections 9 and 51 of the Act.

The DC warned that appropriate legal action will be taken against individuals or groups found violating the ban. In compliance with the government directives, all areas under Mokokchung District have been instructed to enforce the ban to protect and conserve the district's wildlife population.
