Mokokchung, February 20 (MExN): The Mokokchung Municipal Council (MMC) has imposed a penalty of Rs 10,000 on a pork stall owner for allegedly tampering with a weighing scale.
The action was taken following a complaint received on February 19 regarding alleged manipulation of a weighing scale at a pork stall located at Alongmen Ward under MMC jurisdiction, the council Chairperson, Imkongchuba A stated in a press statement.
According to the complaint, a customer had purchased 10 kilograms of pork from a stall bearing Trade Permit No 1864. However, upon re-weighing the purchased meat at other weighing scales, the actual weight was found to be 8.900 kilograms.
Upon receipt of the complaint, MMC officials immediately conducted an inspection at the said stall.
The shop owner was apprehended and the matter was taken up at the MMC office for necessary action.
After due inquiry, the council imposed a penalty by forfeiting the security deposit amount of Rs 10,000 as a first and final warning to the concerned permit holder, the statement added.
“The MMC takes matters of public trust and consumer protection very seriously,” the statement said, adding that all traders and business establishments under its jurisdiction have been strictly directed to ensure that weighing instruments are accurate and not tampered with. “Any violation in this regard shall invite strict action as per relevant rules and regulations,” the council warned.
The Council also encouraged citizens to report any such irregularities to the MMC office to ensure transparency, fairness and accountability in the market.
