Mon district begins campaign to protect children from parasitic worms

First round of National Deworming Day campaign for 2026 was launched in Mon District on March 10 at Konjong Higher Secondary School.

Mon, March 10 (MExN): The first round of the National Deworming Day (NDD) campaign for 2026 was launched in Mon District on March 10 at Konjong Higher Secondary School.

The initiative, aimed at protecting children from Soil Transmitted Helminths (STH), seeks to improve health and nutritional outcomes for those in the 1–10 years age group across the district.

The event commenced during the school assembly and was chaired by Mewang Konyak, SHP Coordinator. Speaking on the occasion, Dr Lily Monyu, Medical Officer (RBSK), delivered the thematic message, underscoring the importance of regular deworming. She explained that STH infections, spread through contaminated soil and poor sanitation, could lead to anaemia, malnutrition, fatigue, and reduced cognitive development in children, adversely affecting their growth and academic performance.

Dr Lily highlighted that the administration of deworming tablets would significantly enhance the nutritional status and overall well-being of children. The campaign is being implemented in convergence with the Health, Social Welfare, and Education Departments through schools and Anganwadi Centres across the district to ensure maximum coverage.

Dr Wungyong Konyak, District Programme Officer (RCH & UIP), addressed the gathering on the Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine. He informed that all girls aged 14 years would be eligible for the vaccination, which serves as a critical preventive measure against cervical cancer and other HPV-related diseases. He urged students to spread awareness about the benefits of vaccination and support public health initiatives.

Following the formal programme, deworming tablets were administered to students at the school, officially rolling out the campaign in the district.

The drive will continue across all educational and anganwadi centres in Mon District to ensure widespread coverage and preventive care for children.
