Mon fish farmers trained in scientific aquaculture practices

Mon, May 16 (MExN): The Department of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources conducted a one-day training programme on scientific fish farming practices at the Agri Hall in Mon on May 16 under the Training and Extension programme for 2026–27.

According to a DIPR report, around 15 fish farmers participated in the training aimed at strengthening their knowledge and technical skills in scientific aquaculture practices.

Welcoming the participants, District Fishery Officer Angun Wangshu said the programme was organised to equip fish farmers with practical knowledge and updated techniques for improving fish production. She also highlighted the differences between traditional and scientific fish farming practices.

During the technical sessions, Fishery Inspector Kedolhouse Kuotsu briefed participants on site selection for fish farming, covering ecological factors such as water supply, water quality, climate, hydrological conditions, soil, and land suitability. He also spoke on biological, operational, economic, and social considerations, including species selection, seed sources, and culture types.

He further explained the different types of ponds used in fish farming, including nursery, rearing, and grow-out ponds, and encouraged farmers to adopt proper farm planning practices.

Fishery Inspector Kito H Yeptho also conducted a session on basic pond management, including pond liming and proper fish feeding techniques. He urged farmers to maintain pond hygiene and regularly monitor water quality for sustainable fish production.
