Mon roads: from development to muddyvelopment?

Dimapur, May 16 (MExN): Mon roads today wore a semblance of roads as a massive social work was undertaken by the district administration, Mon Town Council and the general public at Mon. People from all walks of life participated with great enthusiasm while all offices and business establishments remained closed from 9am. However schools were exempted from the social work due to ongoing examinations.

The social work was organized to reduce the “enormous suffering” caused by the road extension that started last year in the town, according to the Shansham Organization. All available trucks in the town were mobilized while necessary materials were donated by citizens of Mon village from their quarry at Yeling Waterfalls below the village.  The social work was a desperate effort by the public to make the town roads “somewhat plyable”. The condition of the roads, is  such that it takes only a little rain to cause traffic jams as well as put the commuting public into much inconvenience.

It was stated that normal life was being affected. One instance was the increase in prices of essential commodities due to the inaccessibility for trucks into the town from the dislodged/severed/extended electric poles, telephone cables, water pipes and all underground telecom connections. The materials are still lying about unattended, according to the Shansham Organization. “The public has no one to take into account for the damage since the departments are at fight tooth and nail within themselves blaming each other. There is no coordination between them. Besides, two young lives were lost in the first week of this month in a road accident due to the bad roads. How much can a society suffer in the name of development?” Minphong Konyak, Press Secretary of the Shansham Organization asked.

In the beginning everyone was enthusiastic and praised the DAN government with profound anticipation that Mon would change for better. However, after surrendering their lands for common welfare, their faith in the DAN government is wavering, it was stated. It was observed that when Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio visited Mon for the KU Silver Jubilee, he had admonished the local administration, politicians and contractors for “their foolish and unconcerned act in starting mud works during rainy season” and also observed that for this reason Mon had been turned into a “panni kheti” (paddy field).

“Observing present public resentment and opinions, it is clearly visible that the DAN government in the higher echelons is doing much but the lower grass-root level is besmirching the hard labor of the bosses, through negligence and inaptness” the Shansham Secretary observed adding that it is certain if the trend continues “for more than that can be avoided, then the reputation and finally, the life of the DAN government may be at stake.”
