Mon’s HIV/AIDS rate overtakes State’s average

MON, DEC 1 (MExN): The prevalence rate of HIV/AIDS infected persons in the District of Mon, particularly among pregnant mothers has reached to 2% which is more than the State’s prevalence rate which is 1.28%. This was revealed by Dr Vizolie Suokhrie, Deputy Director NSACS, speaking on the scenario of Nagaland. He said that there were more than 20,000 drug addicts in Mon district. He expressed concern that Mon was fast emerging as one of the most-risk areas in the Northeast. According to a survey, the number of infected persons comprising mostly of pregnant mothers in Mon reached 2%,this year, higher than the average prevalence rate of Nagaland which stands at 1.28%. This would mean that even though Mon is not a state it ranks among the 4 States in India with the highest prevalence rate of HIV/AIDS cases. Nagaland at present stands fourth on the scale. The first case of HIV/AIDS case in Nagaland was detected in the year 1990. Since then it has grown aggressively.
