DIMAPUR, MAY 2 (MExN): There are more classrooms than teachers in most of the government run schools under Panso administrative circle, Tuensang district. This dismal state of affairs in the government schools was discovered by the Pathso Range Students’ Union (PRSU), the apex students’ body under Panso circle during its assessment visit to institutions, both government and private run, from April 26-May 1.
The team had visited all the schools in the area, totaling 11, sub-centers at Yokao, Tsuwao, Lengnyu and Kingnyu, and government offices at Panso headquarters to assess the condition and functioning.
Elaborating their findings, the students’ body, in a press release, said none of the schools within the Panso sub-division had the required strength of teachers as per the recommendation of the staffing pattern committee.
It pointed out that of the total 11 schools in the area, 9 of the institutions had more classroom than teachers. For instance, at GPS Lengnyu, there are four teachers for a school which has 7 classrooms (LKG-5th standard). At GPS Kingniu, there are four teachers for a school with 6 classrooms (LKG-4th standard). At GPS Yokao, there are four primary teachers and a community teacher for a school with six classrooms (LKG to 4th Standard). At GPS Ekhao, there are only 3 teachers, with no appointment of Hindi teacher since inception of the school. At GHS Panso, there are shortages of subject teachers.
The students’ body also expressed dismay that most of the government offices were closed without functioning. Absenteeism in duties and rampant practice of keeping substitutes were observed. Many of the staffs, especially in the educational institutions were not performing their duties, it stated. The post of Medical Officer (MO) at PHC Panso was also lying vacant since the resignation of the incumbent Medical Officer.
On the infrastructure front, the students’ body lamented that with the exception of a few, most of the offices and school buildings were old and in pathetic condition requiring immediate attention.
While expressing deep concern over the state of the affairs in the government machineries and institutions, the students’ body has urged upon the state government to make it a priority in addressing the highlighted issues at the earliest.
