More villages, educational institutions declared ‘tobacco free’

Kohima, June 29 (DIPR): The 1st quarterly meeting of the Kohima District Level Coordination Committee on Tobacco was held on June 29 at DC’s Conference hall, Kohima.  

The Deputy Commissioner and Chairman, Kohima District Level Coordination Committee, Rajesh Soundararajan, IAS, delivering the welcome address pointed of the tremendous success of the ban on tobacco with the cooperation of the various departments. He urged the officials in the district to improvise its activities to ensure a total ban of tobacco in the district.  

The District Nodal officer (DTCC), Dr. Arenla Walling informed the house that those schools who had received the card of ambassador are eligible to create awareness programme for the district. Presenting a power point, she informed that three villages and four educational institutions including Gariphema village, Jotsoma and Khonoma village, Modern Institute Kohima, St. Paul Teaching Institute, Kros College and Oriental College, Kohima have been declared tobacco free.  

The house deliberated on various issues including the imposition of total ban on tobacco sale in an around school areas, booking of errant shopkeepers which was entrusted to the village authorities, andorganization of sensitization programme for the shopkeepers especially for the shops in school areas. Members also suggested on forming Colony Action Committees to assist the authorities in the implementation of the same.
