Dimapur, January 30 (MExN): In a delayed report received here, Chingmei Village under Tuensang hosted a meeting of 14 villages namely Chingmei, Waoshu, Taknyu, Yimpang, Chendang, Chendang Saddle, New Chingmei (Chang Villages), Sangphur, Yakor (Yimchunger Villages), Tsawao, Lengnyu, Yokao, Nokyan and Noklak village (Khiamniungan Villages). The village elders deliberated on the need for sustained conservation of forest cover and their other bio resources. They also felt that our rich natural heritage needs to be preserved for future generation. The participants also felt that it is not only conservation that was required but there is also an urgent need to regenerate the fallow land contiguous to existing reserved forest.
The above mentioned 14 villages are the custodians of one of the largest pristine forest cover in Nagaland. These villages unanimously resolved to join the Eastern Nagaland Conservation Area Network (ENCAN).
It may be recalled that ENCAN was formed on 9th of December 2010 at Tuensang in a gathering of 45 villages stretching across the eastern belt from Aboi area in Mon district south ward to Saramati range. With this 14 villages joining ENCAN, along with their satellite villages the total strength of villages under ENCAN now comes to 72 villages. More villages are likely to join ENCAN in the near future. ENCAN is a people-led network without any funding support but based on their realization of the need for forest conservation. The area under ENCAN would then arguably the one of the largest carbon sink in NE India. The workshop at Chingmei village was coordinated by Ms. Yonchingsonla Chang, a member of the working committee of ENCAN and assisted by Mr. Chaanglimba Chang (Tali) and Thangsoi, Khiamniungan.
