The two-day preliminary round of The Morung Debate began today at DBIDL, Don Bosco Higher Secondary School (DBHSS) Campus, River Belt Colony, Dimapur.


Organized by The Morung Express, the first day witnessed tough competition among eight teams of debaters from various colleges in the state.


A total of four matches were held where the first match was fought between Eastern Christian College and The Skeptics on the topic – ‘Proxy Teachers - A necessary evil.’


The second match was fought between Pathfinders and Oracle on the topic – ‘Development and environmental protection can go hand in hand.’


The third match witnessed an intense match between The One and The Brocode on the topic – ‘Is Nagaland a Christian state?’


The final match of the day was fought between Astral and The Chosen One on the much argued topic – ‘Is reservation necessary for empowerment?’


The winners for the day advancing to the Quarter Finals on August 24 include – ‘The Skeptics, Oracle, The One, and Astral.’


Panel of judges for the preliminary round included Nipuni Piku, Human Rights Activist, coordinator of International Alliance of Indigenous and Tribal Peoples of the Tropical Forests (IAITPTF) and member of Forum for Naga Reconciliation; Zubeni Lotha, Photographer and Father Chacko, Director of Shalom Rehabilitation Centre.


Earlier, the event started with an exhortation by Father CT Varghese, Rector of DBHSS. The debate was moderated by Imchala Ozukum and Arien Jamir, while the time keeper was Talimongla Longkumer.


The two-day preliminary round will continue till August 17 with four more matches among eight teams.


The topics for the August 24 Quarter Finals include – ‘Have human rights become obsolete?’ ‘Can RIIN preserve indigenous identity?’ ‘Naga society respects gender justice’ and ‘Prohibition is beneficial for society.’
