Khonoma, November 30 (MExN): The Morung Experience Centre (MEC) at Khonoma was inaugurated on November 29 under the Forest & Biodiversity Management in the Himalaya (Nagaland) Project funded by German Development Cooperation through KfW Development Bank.
Dr. Florian Wieneke, Senior Portfolio Manager, Natural Resources & Climate Asia, KfW Development Bank, graced the occasion as the Special Guest. The event marked a milestone in strengthening eco-tourism, cultural heritage and biodiversity conservation in Khonoma.
In his address, Dr. Florian Wieneke appreciated the dedicated efforts of the project team, the local community and the State Government in conserving biodiversity while promoting sustainable livelihoods. He stated that the inauguration of the MEC signifies the successful culmination of a two-year journey following the announcement of the 25 Years Community Conservation celebrations in 2023. He commended the villagers of Khonoma for more than 25 years of community-led conservation initiatives, describing the village as a model for Nagaland and the country.
The MEC represents community ownership and partnership, with about 22% of the total project investment contributed by the people of Khonoma through land, resources and labour. The Centre has been envisioned as a hub for biodiversity education, conservation learning and eco-tourism, showcasing Khonoma’s cultural and natural heritage to visitors from within and outside the country. The initiative is recognised as a flagship intervention under the FBMP, reflecting strong collaboration between the community and project partners.
Dr. Wieneke expressed hope that the Centre would continue to inspire conservation, learning and community development for generations. He added that the MEC will serve as a knowledge hub for visitors to learn about the cultural values and ecological significance of Khonoma while contributing to eco-tourism, environmental awareness and the preservation of traditional knowledge systems.
Earlier, the programme began with an inaugural prayer by Rev. Tsolie Chase, followed by the ribbon-cutting ceremony. Supongnukshi, IFS, CCF & Project Director, FBMP chaired the event and presented an overview of the MEC project. The welcome address was delivered by Kovi Meyase, NCS, Excise Secretary and Team Leader, NEPED. Short speeches were delivered by Rokovisa Chase, President, Khonoma Rùffùno Nagaland, and Rokongulie Meyase, Chairman, KNCTS, highlighting the vision of the Centre. A folk song was presented by the Phetsukiku Club, Khonoma. The vote of thanks was proposed by Peleviso Viyie, Chairman, ETMC, and the programme concluded with a benediction by Rev. Fr. Salas, Parish Priest.
