Lumami, February 21 (MExN): Nagaland University on Saturday celebrated Mother Language Day at the Conference Hall of its Administrative Complex, highlighting the importance of preserving and promoting indigenous languages.

Prof B Kilangla Jamir, Vice-Chancellor in-charge, was the Chief Guest. She said that the mother language is a vital aspect of one’s identity and urged individuals to strengthen and develop their languages, even improvising if necessary, to enrich personal and community identities. She encouraged the younger generation to elevate their mother tongue to higher levels.

Through a well-researched lecture, Dr Neizo Puro, Department of Botany, exhorted participants to save and propagate their mother language by tracing its history and development. He said, “Though there is strive in family and nation, when we can speak our own dialect or language, it is easier to maintain oneness, peace and harmony.” Dr Puro also highlighted the importance of respecting linguistic diversity, fostering understanding among communities, and leveraging the digital world to promote mother languages.

The programme was chaired by Dr Rumi Dhar, Department of Law. Cultural performances included a dance by campus children and a tribal song presented by T Bethel Kinimi. Faculty, officers, staff, research scholars, and students attended the event.

The celebration concluded with a vote of thanks proposed by Dr Sentijungla, Department of Anthropology, expressing gratitude to the organisers, participants, and attendees for their contributions to the successful observance of the day.

The event underscored Nagaland University’s commitment to preserving linguistic heritage and promoting cultural diversity.
